KAMPALA, UGANDA -Top entrepreneurs have discussed opportunities for youth in Africa’s growing gig economy during a Freelancer Summit in Kampala, Uganda.
“The gig economy presents a unique opportunity for young Africans to take control of their careers and create their own paths,” said Japheth Kawanguzi, Team Lead at the Innovation Village. “However, it requires adaptability, intentionality, and a willingness to learn and grow.”
Michael Niyitegeka, Director of Refractory Academy, emphasized the importance of understanding the scope of work and required competencies. “Success in the gig economy hinges on grasping the entire scope of a project and knowing the competencies required to deliver it effectively.”
Bart Cornille, D4D and Innovation Expert at Enabel Uganda, highlighted the value of soft skills. “Communication, time management, and teamwork are essential in building a strong professional network and portfolio in the gig economy.”
Daina Katto, Managing Partner at Steadman Global, advised young freelancers to continually build their skillset and back them up with certifications. “Professionalism is key to survival in the industry, and certifications demonstrate expertise and commitment.”
Dr. Egwang Mitch Ronnie emphasized the importance of resilience and constant adaptation. “Every failure is a chance to win or learn, and young freelancers must be willing to take risks and learn from their mistakes.”
