President Yoweri Museveni appoints Dr. Michael Atingi-Ego as new Governor of Bank of Uganda and Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba as Deputy Governor
KAMPALA – President Yoweri Museveni has named Dr. Michael Atingi-Ego as the new Governor of the Bank of Uganda, with Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba appointed as his deputy. The appointments are pending parliamentary approval.
Dr. Atingi-Ego, who has been serving as Deputy Governor, succeeds the late Prof. Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile. With a distinguished career in economics, Atingi-Ego previously held the position of Executive Director at the Macroeconomics and Financial Management Institute of Eastern and Southern Africa. His extensive expertise spans monetary policy, financial management, and economic development.
In his new role, Atingi-Ego will oversee the implementation of monetary policies, regulation of the banking sector, and management of Uganda’s foreign exchange reserves. He has been a strong advocate for the development of capital markets in Uganda, emphasizing their critical role in driving the country’s economic growth.
Prof. Nuwagaba, an international consultant specializing in economic transformation, brings a wealth of knowledge in fiscal policy, financial management, and development economics. His appointment as Deputy Governor is expected to bolster the Bank’s leadership during a pivotal period for Uganda’s economy.
President Museveni has submitted both appointments to Parliament for vetting and approval.
