Since commencing operations in Uganda in 2022, Lyca Mobile has successfully acquired one million subscribers.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Tuesday evening hosted a delegation of investors from Lyca Mobile Telephone Company at State House Entebbe.

The delegation, led by Chairman Subaskaran Allirajah, included Minister of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) Executive Director, Mr. George William Nyombi Thembo, and Director of Industry Affairs and Content Development at UCC, Mrs. Julianne Mweheire.

Mrs. Julianne Mweheire stated that the purpose of the delegation’s visit to State House Entebbe was to express their gratitude to President Museveni for the support provided to the company in launching its services in Uganda.

Since commencing operations in Uganda in 2022, Lyca Mobile has successfully acquired one million subscribers.

President Museveni conveyed his appreciation for the positive impact of Lyca Mobile’s services in the country and commended the company for its achievements.

“Mr. Subaskaran Allirajah, the Chairman of Lyca Mobile, and his delegation visited me at State House Entebbe today. Their dedication to elevating Uganda’s telecom industry is commendable,” the President said in a post on his X.

He added: “Enhanced connectivity and digital access nationwide will definitely advance the NRM’s wealth creation agenda.”

Mr. Subaskaran assured the President that they offer cheap services which are affordable to all Ugandans. “We offer affordable services to all Ugandans,” he said.

The UCC recently granted a National Telecommunication Operator (NTO) license to Lycamobile, making the company the Third National Operator.

Lycamobile, whose parent company Tangerine Limited has operated in Uganda since 2008, got the NTO license on March 24, 2021.

In December last year, the Bank of Uganda said it was assessing an application in which Lyca Mobile is seeking to operate two systems, including payment services provider and payment systems operator, which largely relate to mobile money operations.
