SafeBoda has launched its digital payment service, effectively transitioning from only being a ride hailing App.

SafeBoda’s App now offers interest on savings, bill payments, merchant payments, cash sending and receiving services as well as airtime top-ups.

Speaking at the launch of the new SafeBoda payments services in Kampala on Wednesday, Alastair Sussock, the company Co-CEO and Co-Founder, explained how they started their journey and their ambitions.

“We started from Kyabando as a ride hailing company in 2017, this year we added payment services. We believe in the next few years, we are about to see the economy fully embrace digital payment systems. And that’s why SafeBoda is here,” he said.

Ricky Papa, the other SafeBoda co-founder, said: “Our ambition is to help Ugandans be able to receive better travel & payment services especially with safety as first priority.”

The Head of Payments at Bank of Uganda, Mackay Aomu, hailed SafeBoda for the innovation.

“We were so excited when we saw the SafeBoda app, it’s been long overdue. As BoU, we hope to extend digitalization to agriculture and social services, this is the new industrial revolution, no one should be left behind,” he said.

SafeBoda in December 2021 secured investment funds from Google  vita its Startups Accelerator Africa programme.
