Government of Uganda represented by has received a grant worth 6 Million Swedish Krona (Approx. Shs2.5 Billion) from Sweden to undertake analytical studies for floating solar development in Uganda.
The grant was handed over by Ms Maria Håkansson, the Swedish Ambassador to Uganda, to Dr. Eng. Harrison E. Mutikanga, the Chief Executive Officer of Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL).
The study is envisaged to take 21 months starting in January 2022, with a focus on pioneering the floating solar development on either of the reservoirs at the hydropower plants of Nalubaale & Kiira, Bujagali, Isimba or Karuma.
This follows the successful signing of an MoU between Government of Uganda & Swedish government to support the energy sector.
At the ceremony held at UEGCL offices in Kampala, Embassy of Sweden in Uganda was represented by Ms Håkansson and Maria Hammarskjöld Håkansson, the CEO of Swedfund, the country’s development agency.
“I hope that this study can lead to the development of a viable floating solar project here in Uganda, so that Uganda can continue to pave the way for sustainable renewable energy technologies in both the region and the continent,” Ms Håkansson said.
“We are grateful to the Embassy of Sweden in Uganda for extending this grant to UEGCL to undertake this project and we believe this will help Government of Uganda to meet the electricity generation capacity needed power the socio-economic transformation of the country,” Dr Mutikanga said.
