Kisoro District Local Government has handed over 620 acres of land to the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) for setting up of an industrial park.
The piece of land, which is located in Kibaya, 15kms from the centre of Kisoro Municipality, was on Wednesday handed over to UIA officials, who included the Director General, Robert Mukiza, and the chairperson of the Board of Uganda Investment Authority (UIA), Morrison Rwakakamba.
Also in attendance was Investment minister Evelyn Anite.
According to Kisoro District leaders, the area has agricultural products and minerals such as gold, tin, wolfram and pozzolana to power the planned Kisoro Industrial and Business Park.
While receiving the land offer, Ms Anite said the industrial park will be strategically located to serve markets in DR Congo, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania.
She hailed the people of Kisoro for providing the free land as well as the district council for conducting a feasibility study. The minister appealed to other districts to do the same.
Kisoro became the second district to heed to a presidential directive to local governments to offer free land for the establishment of industrial parks across the country.
On Tuesday, Mbarara District leaders handed over 50 acres of land to the government for industrial parks.
Ms Anite said 500 acres are required for establishment of each of 25 industrial parks countrywide.
