Uganda has launched a new platform aimed at accelerating innovation in financial technology (fintech) and positioning the country as a regional hub for digital financial services.

Dubbed Fintech Fridays Uganda Edition, the initiative is a partnership between the Makerere University Innovation and Incubation Center (MIIC) and the Afriventia Group. It seeks to bring together fintech startups, investors, regulators, financial institutions and technology experts to discuss emerging trends and unlock investment opportunities.

Speaking at the launch in Kampala, Diana Nannono Mugagga, Head of the Private Sector Development Unit at the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, said the platform supports the government’s ambition of building a competitive digital economy anchored on innovation.

She said the initiative will provide an avenue for dialogue, collaboration and knowledge sharing while helping Uganda strengthen its position in the fast-growing fintech industry.

“Fintech has become a key driver of financial inclusion, economic growth and digital transformation. Platforms such as Fintech Fridays are critical in connecting innovators with policymakers, investors and industry players to accelerate the growth of the sector,” she said.

The monthly forum will feature discussions on emerging technologies shaping financial services, including artificial intelligence, blockchain, cybersecurity, digital payments and financial inclusion.

Officials said the sessions will also provide startups with opportunities to showcase their products, exchange ideas with industry experts and explore partnerships that can help them expand into regional and international markets.

The Makerere University Innovation and Incubation Center said the platform builds on its efforts to nurture technology-driven enterprises through research, mentorship, business development support and market linkages.

The centre noted that while Uganda has witnessed a steady rise in innovative startups, many entrepreneurs continue to face challenges in accessing investment capital, strategic partnerships and markets.

Afriventia Group said Fintech Fridays would help bridge those gaps by creating stronger connections between innovators and financiers while exposing startups to global best practices.

The initiative comes at a time when Uganda is experiencing rapid growth in digital financial services, supported by increasing internet penetration, mobile money adoption and a youthful population embracing technology-based solutions.

Stakeholders said strengthening collaboration between government, academia, the private sector and investors will be essential in unlocking the country’s fintech potential and expanding access to affordable financial services.

They expressed optimism that the platform will contribute to developing innovative solutions that address local financial challenges while enhancing Uganda’s competitiveness in the regional digital economy.
