Overview:

With only 500,000 Ugandans insured, Stanbic and Prudential upgrade Medi-Protect with a new UGX 350,000 annual inpatient package to boost penetration.

KAMPALA, Uganda — Stanbic Bank Uganda and Prudential Assurance Uganda Limited have unveiled an enhanced version of their joint health insurance product, Stanbic Medi-Protect, in an effort to expand access to medical cover in a country where market penetration remains critical low.

The upgraded insurance solution introduces broader medical benefits, higher coverage limits and a new low-cost inpatient-only option designed to protect individuals and families from sudden financial shocks caused by illness and hospitalization.

According to data shared by the companies at the Kampala launch, health insurance penetration in Uganda remains starkly low. Out of a population exceeding 48 million people, only about 500,000 Ugandans currently have medical insurance coverage. This deficit leaves the vast majority of households vulnerable to significant out-of-pocket healthcare expenses.

Israel Arinaitwe, the head of personal banking at Stanbic Bank Uganda, said the updates directly respond to a growing demand for flexible and relevant healthcare financing. He noted that the enhanced packaging allows customers to choose medical cover that aligns closely with their family dynamics, health needs and financial priorities.

Echoing these sentiments, Prudential Uganda Chief Executive Officer Tetteh Ayitevie emphasized that serious illnesses impact more than just physical health; they disrupt incomes and strain everyday obligations like school fees. The new tiers aim to make health cover simpler to understand and easier to access for ordinary citizens.

Key Features of the Enhanced Product

The revised Stanbic Medi-Protect is split into three main categories to accommodate different consumer budgets and needs:

  • Inpatient-Only Cover: This newly introduced tier is the most affordable pathway into health insurance, with premiums starting at UGX 350,000 annually. It provides hospitalization benefits up to UGX 100 million and includes built-in life cover, critical illness protection, total permanent disability benefits, last expense support and school fees assistance for children if the policyholder passes away.
  • Individual Cover: This package features comprehensive inpatient and outpatient treatment, maternity care, dental and optical services, and disability benefits. It is organized into Silver Plus, Gold Plus and Platinum Plus tiers, with coverage limits ranging from UGX 30 million to UGX 200 million.
  • Family Shared Cover: Designed to lower the cost burden for larger households, this option allows multiple family members to share benefits under a single policy. The package features no age limits on dependents, and the premiums become more cost-effective as the family size increases.

Dogo Singh, the manager of bancassurance at Stanbic Bank Uganda, reported that coverage limits for individual plans more than doubled across selected categories under this upgrade. He noted that the highest tier, Platinum Plus, now yields up to UGX 200 million in medical cover value.

The upgraded health solution will be distributed through Stanbic Bank’s extensive branch network, dedicated relationship managers and digital banking channels. Both institutions expressed optimism that the revised Medi-Protect packages will play a meaningful role in driving insurance uptake and fostering long-term financial resilience across Uganda.
