Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) has signed a Transmission Service Agreement with Gridworks LLP, through its subsidiary Amari, in a deal officials say marks a significant step in strengthening Uganda’s electricity transmission network.
The agreement was signed by UETCL chief executive Eng Richard Matsiko and Gridworks chief executive Mr Christopher Flavin, in the presence of the UK High Commissioner to Uganda, Ms Lisa Chesney.
Speaking at the signing, Eng Matsiko described the partnership as strategic and potentially transformative for the country’s power sector, expressing optimism that its implementation would deliver measurable improvements to the national grid.
Under the pilot arrangement, the project will focus on upgrading key transmission substations in Tororo, Mbarara North, Mbarara South and Nkenda. The upgrades are aimed at improving grid reliability and capacity to meet Uganda’s rising electricity demand, while also creating employment opportunities during the construction phase.
Mr Flavin welcomed the partnership, commending the Government of Uganda for its leadership and sustained engagement in advancing the project to the implementation stage.
The agreement is aligned with ongoing reforms in Uganda’s electricity sector. In 2023, amendments to the Electricity Act paved the way for private sector participation in the refurbishment, upgrading and development of transmission infrastructure, providing the regulatory framework under which the project is being implemented.
