KAMPALA – The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has stepped up enforcement operations nationwide as the festive season approaches, targeting smugglers using increasingly sophisticated methods to evade taxes.
In a notable intelligence-led operation on Tuesday in Mayuge district, URA officers intercepted a Subaru vehicle carrying 1,000 undeclared Samsung smartphones. The seizure marked a major success in the authority’s ongoing crackdown on illicit trade.
In a separate operation, enforcement teams foiled a rice-smuggling attempt in Muwayo. Acting on credible intelligence, officers monitored a store and tracked rice loaded onto a cement truck. The vehicle was intercepted in Idudi and escorted to the URA station in Iganga for inspection, where authorities recovered 99 bags of Baraf rice, each weighing 25 kilograms, concealed within the truck.
Both the seized goods and the vehicles involved remain in URA custody as investigations and legal proceedings continue.
“The long arm of the law will continue to clamp down on economic saboteurs as enforcement intensifies across the region,” said Moses Wanjala, Acting Manager of Enforcement in the Eastern region.
The URA’s proactive operations highlight the authority’s commitment to curbing smuggling and safeguarding government revenue during peak trading periods.
