The Green Schools Initiative aims to instill environmental responsibility in young learners while transforming schools into centers of sustainability. Planned interventions include installing solar energy systems, establishing fruit and vegetable gardens, improving waste management, constructing sanitation and handwashing facilities, setting up rainwater harvesting systems, and implementing environmental and health awareness programs.
Speaking at the launch on Thursday, November 20, 2025, EACOP Deputy Managing Director JB Habumugisha said the initiative reflects the company’s long-term commitment to environmental stewardship. “By integrating green practices in schools, we are nurturing a generation that will champion environmental protection and sustainable living,” he noted.
Rotary leaders echoed the importance of the partnership. Past District Governor Xavier Ssentamu (District 9213) said the collaboration aligns with Rotary’s mission to protect the environment and strengthen community well-being. “Working with schools allows us to reach the future custodians of our planet,” he said.
Apollo Ampumwize, Country Chair Uganda (District 9214), emphasized the initiative’s potential to create long-term impact. “We are empowering children and teachers to become advocates for a cleaner, greener, and healthier environment. The Green Schools Initiative is not just a project – it’s a movement toward a sustainable future,” he said.
The launch event brought together representatives from EACOP Ltd., Rotary Uganda, district officials, and the school administration, marking a collaborative step toward promoting environmental consciousness among Uganda’s young learners.
