KAMPALA | November 11 — SanlamAllianz General Insurance Uganda has launched a new microinsurance product dubbed “On-the-GO Accident Cover,” offering travellers and daily commuters affordable protection against accidental injury, disability, or death.
Unveiled at the company’s headquarters in Kololo, the product is designed to provide instant, accessible cover starting from as little as Shs1,300. It can be purchased easily through a mobile application available on the Play Store.
According to the insurer, the On-the-GO Accident Cover provides compensation for disablement, accidental medical expenses, and death or funeral costs resulting from bodily injury sustained during the policy period. Claims are valid if the injury or death occurs within 24 months of the accident.
The benefit structure includes Shs1 million for death due to accident, Shs1 million for permanent disablement, Shs500,000 for funeral expenses, and Shs650,000 for accidental medical expenses, bringing the maximum payout to Shs3.1 million.
Speaking at the launch, Ruth Namuli, the Chief Executive Officer of SanlamAllianz General Insurance Uganda, said the product was developed with simplicity and inclusivity in mind.
“The product is for the safety of all of us. The risks on the road are real,” she said. “Anyone with a smartphone can easily access it through our app and even cover those they are traveling with.”
Namuli said the company’s goal is to make insurance more relevant to the daily lives of Ugandans by offering practical and affordable solutions.
“We believe insurance must be practical and within reach. Travel is constant and risky,” she added, revealing that the company handles about 2,500 motor-related claims annually, highlighting the need for broader accident protection.
The product’s launch comes at a time of rapid growth in Uganda’s microinsurance sector. According to the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA), Gross Written Premiums (GWP) for microinsurance rose by 242.7 percent to Shs2.1 billion in the second quarter of 2025, up from Shs610 million in the same period of 2024.
Regulators and industry experts attribute the surge to new frameworks encouraging innovation and financial inclusion in insurance.
Stephen Kaddu, Manager of Supervision at the IRA, welcomed SanlamAllianz’s initiative, saying it supports the Authority’s goal of expanding access to insurance across Uganda.
“We encourage innovations that respond to the everyday lives of people,” Kaddu said. “This product is easy to use, easy to access, and affordable.”
The On-the-GO Accident Cover adds to a growing list of digital and microinsurance products targeting Uganda’s expanding low- and middle-income market segments, as insurers seek to bridge the protection gap and deepen financial inclusion.
