SanlamAllianz General Insurance Uganda launched On-the-Go Accident Cover, a personal accident policy providing up to 3.15 million shillings in benefits for local travelers starting at less than $1.

KAMPALA, UGANDA — SanlamAllianz General Insurance Uganda launched a personal accident policy for local travelers Tuesday, offering coverage for as little as 1,300 Ugandan shillings, or less than $1.

The SanlamAllianz On-the-Go Accident Cover is designed to compensate Ugandans traveling within the country for medical expenses resulting from an accident, or to provide payment to beneficiaries in the event of death. The minimum premium is 1,300 shillings, making the insurance accessible to users of various transport modes.

Speaking at the launch at the company’s head office in Kololo, CEO Ruth Namuli said the product responds to the risks on Uganda’s roads.

“Every day, millions of Ugandans travel by road,” Namuli said. “But despite this large number, only a small percentage of road users have accident insurance. One accident can wipe out a family’s savings in a single day. With this cover, we are giving Ugandans financial dignity in the face of risk.”

The policy is available to people traveling by public or private road transport, including boda-bodas, Uber taxis and bodas, buses, minibuses, special hire vehicles and personal motorcycles up to 750cc.

“We are investing in products that mirror how people actually live and move,” Namuli added. “Travel is frequent, risk is constant and protection should be instant. That’s what On-the-Go delivers.”

Steven Kaddu Mukasa, representing the Insurance Regulatory Authority CEO Al hajj Ibrahim Kaddunabi Lubega, praised SanlamAllianz for the innovation.

“As a regulator, we strongly encourage innovations that respond to real social and economic challenges and we believe that ‘On The Go’ accident cover is going to add value to people’s lives,” Kaddu said. He added that the policy received IRA approval after due diligence.

Dr. Donato Laboke, the head of marketing and channel development, detailed the policy’s benefits, which cover death, disablement, accidental medical expenses and funeral costs resulting from an accident within 24 months of the injury.

“Our mandate is to deliver insurance solutions that are accessible and practical and you can start with a minimum of just 1,300 shillings,” Laboke said. Customers can access up to 3.15 million shillings in benefits, including 1 million shillings for accidental death, 1 million shillings for permanent disability, 650,000 shillings for medical treatment and 500,000 shillings for funeral expenses.

The launch is part of a wider strategy by SanlamAllianz to increase digital access to insurance through the SanlamAllianz Insurance App, a mobile application that allows customers to purchase a variety of products and access services digitally.
