URSB urges Ugandan businesses to renew over 2,000 expiring trademarks within 60 days to safeguard brand identity and legal protection.
KAMPALA, Uganda — More than 2,000 trademarks in Uganda are at risk of permanent deletion from the national register if their owners fail to renew them within 60 days, the Uganda Registration Services Bureau warned Friday.
The urgent deadline means trademark holders must act quickly to avoid losing legal protections and brand identities. The potential deletions stem from owners’ failure to maintain registrations, as required by the Trademarks Act, Cap 225, and the Trademarks Regulations, 2023.
URSB officials emphasized that trademarks not renewed within this critical window will be permanently removed, opening the door for competitors to legally register similar marks. This could result in significant losses for businesses, eroding established brand equity and market trust.
“Once a trademark is deleted, others can claim rights to that name or a similar one, putting the original owner’s brand identity at serious risk,” said Maria Nyangoma, the outgoing commissioner for Trademarks and Geographical Indications.
The agency is urging all trademark owners, including businesses and legal practitioners, to verify their trademark status and begin the renewal process immediately.
The complete list of expired trademarks is available on the URSB website. URSB highlights that timely renewal is a vital investment in maintaining competitive advantage and customer recognition.
“Don’t let your brand be vulnerable,” said Gilbert Agaba, the outgoing commissioner for intellectual property. “Act now to protect your legacy.”
