NAKASERO, Uganda — President Yoweri Museveni has officially endorsed Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service for entry into the Ugandan market, citing its potential to significantly enhance internet connectivity in the country’s remote regions.
In a statement released Tuesday, Museveni announced he held a meeting with Starlink representatives, emphasizing the company’s commitment to providing affordable internet access.
“I appreciate their commitment to providing low-cost internet in hard-to-reach areas and establishing a presence in Uganda. They are welcome,” the president said.
This endorsement marks a key step in Starlink’s efforts to expand its services in Uganda, following its application for a license from the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC). Museveni’s approval underscores the government’s recognition of the transformative potential of Starlink’s technology. By bypassing the limitations of traditional terrestrial internet infrastructure, Starlink could bring reliable internet access to communities that have long been digitally isolated.
Starlink’s coverage maps indicate plans to serve numerous districts across Uganda, including both urban and remote areas. This widespread deployment could have a significant impact on various sectors, including education, healthcare, and economic development.
While specific pricing details for Starlink’s services in Uganda are still pending, the president’s endorsement signals a strong commitment to facilitating the company’s entry. The ongoing regulatory process with the UCC will determine the precise timeline for the launch.
The government views Starlink’s arrival as a key component in its strategy to bridge the digital divide and promote technological advancement across Uganda.
