Overview:

The Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, Dr Michael Atingi-Ego, said the move is part of their corporate social responsibility activities aimed at improvement of maternal and child care in Uganda.

Bank of Uganda (BoU) has renovated Kyanamukaka Health IV and handed it over to Masaka District leaders.

BoU renovated the In-patients and Out-Patients building, painted the maternity ward and supplied various medical equipment and supplies.

Speaking at the handover on Friday, 06 May 2022, the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, Dr Michael Atingi-Ego, said the move is part of their corporate social responsibility activities aimed at improvement of maternal and child care in Uganda.

“Inspired by the spirit of Ubuntu (the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all of humanity) the BoU staff rallied well-wishers and stakeholders through a charity walk to raise funds for aiding the improvement of maternal and child care during the commemoration of the central bank’s Golden Jubilee in 2016.

The board, management and staff of the BoU believe that every woman and child has a right to good health care provided in a well-equipped health facility,” Dr Ego said.

Ms Susan W. Kanyemibwa, Bank of Uganda Secretary, said the Board, Management and Staff of the BoU believe that every woman and child has a right to good health care provided in a well-equipped health facility.

‘I would like to encourage the mothers of Masaka and the surrounding community to utilize the antenatal care services offered at the Health Facility to protect their lives and those of their unborn babies,” Ms Kanyemibwa said.

“One of the key equipment delivered to Kyanamukaka Health Centre IV is an ultrasound machine which I was told is a game changer that will greatly aid medical diagnosis especially in the areas of gynaecology and obstetrics,” she added.

Dr Faith Nakiyimba, the Masaka District Health Officer, said Kyanamukaka’s performance is lower than the target due to understaffing and lack of housing.

“We promise to improve our performance with the new facilities the Bank has donated,” she added.

The Member of Parliament for Kimanya-Kabonera Division in Masaka City, Dr Abed Bwanika, hailed BoU for refurbishing the health centre and considering Masaka for a Currency Branch.

“The Bank should also consider extending the CSR activities to the housing for Police officers,” he said.

Former Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi attended the function.

To date, the Bank has funded the renovation of Bwizibwera Health Centre IV in Mbarara District, Ayivuni Health Centre III in Arua, Nakaloke Health Centre III in Mbale, Omel Health Centre II in Gulu District, Hamurwa in Rubanda District and Ruteete Health Centre III in Kabarole District.

Earlier, BoU held a town hall meeting with area leaders during which it explained its activities.

Nathan Lujjumwa, CAO Masaka District, said: “This event has enabled the locals to appreciate and feel BOU’s impact on the community.”

Mr. Andrew Lukyamuzi, Chairman LCV Masaka, urged the Bank to use the opportunity to educate the leaders on the Banks mandate.

Florence Namayanja, Mayor Masaka City, said there is need for more sensitization of masses about BOU products.
