Uganda’s current inflation measured by the consumer price index for the last 12 months has increased from 2.7% that was recorded in January 2022, to 3.2% in February 2022.
According to Edgar Niyimpa, a principal statistician at the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, the increase in inflation has been driven by the increase in commodity prices, including education service inflation that stands at 9.0%.
According to the UBOS report released on Monday, February 28, 2022, Uganda’s Monthly Headline Inflation for February 2022 increased by 1% compared to the 0.3% drop in Jan 2022, the .
“This was due to the monthly Education Services inflation that rose by 8.4% Furnishings, Household Equipment by 3.7%,” the report states.
UBOS further reveals that Annual Headline inflation for February 2022 rose to 3.2% from 2.7% of January 2022, also due to Education Services (9%), Furnishings, Household (9.6%), Restaurants and Accommodation (3.2%), Clothing and Footwear (2.5%), Transport (0.6%).
However, price decreases were realized on Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (4.5%), Health (2.2%), Information and Communication (-1.4%), Alcoholic Beverages, Tobacco and Narcotics (1.0%).
The Annual Core Inflation as of February 2022 rose to 3.1% from 2.3% of January 2022. This was due to Annual ‘Other Goods’ Inflation that rose to 5.1% from 4.3% of January 2022. Annual Services Inflation increased to 0.8% in February from 0.0% of January 2022.
The Non-Core inflation decreased to 3.5% percent down from 5% in January 2022. This was due to; Annual ‘Food Crops and Related Items’ Inflation decreased to 0.7%.
Annual Energy Fuel and Utilities Inflation (EFU) increased to 7%. Annual Petrol inflation increased to 34%.
The highest inflation countrywide was recorded in Gulu at 4.4% in February 2022 as compared to 4.5% recorded in January 2022. The least inflation however was recorded in Jinja at 1.6% in February 2022.
