Bank of Uganda (BoU) on Friday, 08 October 2021 handed over the refurbished maternity ward at Omel Apem Health Centre II in Gulu District.
The maternity ward was refurbished by the central bank under its corporate social responsibility programme.
Mrs Susan Kanyemibwa, the BoU Secretary, who presided over the function, said the renovated facility will now serve the community more effectively.
“With the extension and renovation of the maternity ward, our mothers will give birth in a proper health facility with appropriate medical equipment,” she said.
Omel Health Centre II serves a population of over 1,000 people.
But Ms Kanyemibwa said this is high for a health centre II, saying that Government will soon upgrade it to health centre III status.
She thanked Gulu district officials, and the management and staff of the health centre for their cooperation on granting a facelift to the facility.
She said Bank of Uganda plans to support Health centres in the 9 regions where the Bank of Uganda has branches such as; Fort Portal, Kabale, Jinja and Lira.
The Bank has so far renovated and handed over the following Centres: Bwizibwera Health Centre IV in Mbarara (in 2019), Ayivuni Health Centre III in Arua (in 2020) Nakaloke Health Centre III in Mbale (in 2020) and now Omel Health Centre II in Gulu (2021).
The health centres were renovated with proceeds from BoU’s charity walk held in 2016 as the bank commemorated its Golden Jubilee in 2016.
The charity walk was under the theme;“Maternal and Child Healthcare for a Healthy Society.”
