Absa Bank Uganda reports 17.9% growth in card payments as it launches the Island Escape campaign offering all-expenses-paid trips to Prestige and Premier customers.
KAMPALA, Uganda — Absa Bank Uganda has recorded a 17.9% growth in card payment volumes, significantly outperforming the broader market as the lender moves to further stimulate digital transactions through a new rewards campaign.
The bank reported Thursday that its active card usage grew by 14.6% as of March 31, 2026, compared to a 2% growth rate across the rest of the industry. The surge comes as the Bank of Uganda notes a rise in electronic payments driven by smartphone penetration and increased consumer confidence in digital financial services.
To maintain this momentum, the bank launched the Island Escape campaign, which offers Personal Prestige and Premier banking customers a chance to win all-expenses-paid island trips for two.
The campaign, running from May to July 2026, automatically enters cardholders into a monthly draw when they use their debit or credit cards to pay for goods and services.
Absa continues to lead the local credit card sector, accounting for more than 70% of cards in issue and 69% of total credit card transaction volumes as of December 2025.
Moses Rutahigwa, retail and business banking director at Absa Bank Uganda, said the bank is focusing on products that offer security and global access. He noted that features such as real-time transaction alerts and 3D Secure authentication are central to supporting the growth in card usage.
One winner will be selected each month during the 90-day promotion, with three winners in total receiving getaway packages.
