Janet Museveni praises "Seeds for the Future" program for equipping Ugandan youth with advanced ICT skills.
KAMPALA, Uganda — First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports Janet Museveni praised Huawei Technologies-Uganda for its initiatives to improve digital skills among the nation’s youth, highlighting the company’s role in advancing ICT education.
Speaking at a ceremony on, Mrs. Museveni awarded students who excelled in the 2024-2025 Huawei ICT Global competition and launched the 2025-2026 competition in Uganda. The event, held at State House Nakasero, was attended by key officials from the Ministry of Education, the Chinese Embassy, and Huawei.
“I thank Huawei for being a significant part of our work in this digital era,” Mrs. Museveni said. “Thank you for identifying and nurturing the talent of our young people in the area of ICT.”
The Minister specifically recognized the achievements of Michelle Chemutai, who became the first female in Africa to earn the Huawei Certified Internetwork Expert certification. Chemutai was awarded a special prize of 8.9 million shillings (about $2,400) for her achievement.
She also celebrated the “Seeds for the Future” program, which has sent 60 Ugandans to China since 2016 for hands-on training in advanced technologies such as 5G and artificial intelligence. The First Lady presented a dummy check of 12 million shillings (about $3,200) to students for their performance in the recent competitions.
Chinese Ambassador to Uganda Zhang Lizhong commended Huawei’s efforts, noting that nurturing ICT talent is crucial for national development and economic growth. He also affirmed China’s continued support for Uganda’s digital transformation.
Huawei’s East Africa Multi Country Regional CEO, Dong Xuefeng, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Uganda’s digital education and proposed a strategic partnership with the Ministry of Education. He also requested support for single-source procurement to facilitate the “Smart Education Project,” aimed at digitally transforming classrooms.
A participant in the Seeds for the Future program, Blessed Nanyonga, expressed gratitude for the experience, stating that the technical training and cultural exchange had broadened her perspective and equipped her with innovative skills.
