KAMPALA, Uganda — Airtel Uganda, one of the country’s leading telecommunications companies, has set its sights on expanding internet access nationwide, a move aimed at bridging the digital divide and boosting economic growth.

The company’s managing director, Soumendra Sahu, made the commitment during a courtesy visit to the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) executive director, George William Nyombi Tembo.

“We recognize that internet access is a critical component of economic development, and we are committed to playing our part in expanding access to underserved communities,” Sahu said.

Uganda has made significant strides in expanding internet access in recent years, but rural areas remain largely underserved. According to UCC data, internet penetration in rural areas stands at just 12%, compared to 60% in urban areas.

The UCC has set a target of increasing internet penetration to 50% by 2025, and Airtel Uganda’s expansion plans are expected to play a key role in achieving this goal.

“We welcome Airtel Uganda’s commitment to expanding internet access,” Nyombi said. “This aligns with our national goal of increasing internet penetration and promoting digital inclusion.”

In addition to expanding its network, Airtel Uganda is also exploring innovative solutions to increase internet adoption, including mobile money services and digital literacy programs.

“We believe that internet access is a fundamental right, and we are committed to making it more accessible and affordable for all Ugandans,” Sahu said.
