Entebbe, Uganda – Security personnel at Entebbe International Airport have seized $2 million in counterfeit US currency.
The seizure followed a tip-off from a reliable source that a large consignment of counterfeit currency was being smuggled into the country through the airport.
A joint security operation involving the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), Entebbe police, and the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SH-ACU) was swiftly launched to track down the suspects and recover the counterfeit currency.
After weeks of surveillance, the security team finally tracked down the suspects to a garage in Entebbe Municipality, where they were hiding the counterfeit currency.
A search of the garage uncovered 40 large and medium metallic boxes containing the suspected counterfeit US dollars. The boxes had been cleverly disguised with soil to make them appear heavier.
Three suspects were arrested at the scene and are currently being held at Entebbe police station. They are expected to face charges related to counterfeiting and fraud.
The seizure of counterfeit currency is a major achievement for the security agencies involved and demonstrates their commitment to combating transnational organized crime.
“This is a significant blow to the criminal networks involved in the production and distribution of counterfeit currency,” said a senior security official. “We will continue to work tirelessly to disrupt and dismantle these networks.”
