Kampala, Uganda – In a significant development for Uganda’s oil and gas sector, TotalEnergies President for Exploration and Production, Mr. Nicolas Terraz, has paid a courtesy call to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, at State House-Entebbe.
During the meeting, Mr. Terraz provided an update on the progress of the Tilenga oil exploration project, which is one of the largest oil projects in East Africa.
He expressed his appreciation for the government’s support and reiterated TotalEnergies’ commitment to the project’s success.
Mr. Terraz reported that drilling and pipeline activities at the Tilenga site are proceeding well, with over 8,000 Ugandans employed in the project.
The project aims to drill around 400 wells from 31 locations, with oil to be transported via the 1,443 km East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) to the Tanzanian port of Tanga.
President Museveni reassured Mr. Terraz of the government’s support to ensure the project’s success, highlighting the importance of the oil sector in Uganda’s economic development.
The President noted that the government has taken steps to harmonize crude oil supply, cover funding gaps with shareholders, engage stakeholders on drilling plans, and resolve payments for Ugandan sub-contractors.
Mr. Terraz was accompanied by key executives from TotalEnergies, including Mr. Mike Sangster, Senior Vice President for Africa, and Mr. Philippe Groueix, General Manager of TotalEnergies Uganda.
The Ugandan government was represented by Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Hon. Ruth Nankabirwa, Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Hon. Matia Kasaija, and other officials from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, including Permanent Secretary, Dr. Irene Batebe.
