Uganda has been elected to a leadership position at the East African Revenue Authorities Audit Executives (EARACAE) forum held recently at Mestil Hotel in Kampala. The engagement was a significant milestone for Uganda, demonstrating its commitment to strengthening audit systems to address emerging risks in an increasingly digital and interconnected revenue environment.

Uganda’s representative to EARACAE, Herbert Rusoke, the Commissioner Internal Audit, will represent East African auditors for three months. He will be deputised by Kenya Revenue Authority’s Deputy Commissioner Internal Audit, Phares Chege.

In his inaugural remarks, Rusoke thanked fellow administrators for entrusting him with the role. He noted that as the region moves toward unifying internal audit functions, his immediate focus will be on identifying practical starting points.

“Based on the presentations that we have had here, there are those things like cross border audits that we can run with and at least to try and put in place the framework that we need,” Rusoke said.

He added that his leadership will prioritise bringing the Zanzibar Revenue Authority on board to ensure the regional audit body is fully constituted.

His deputy, Chege, pledged close collaboration with regional counterparts to build a strong foundation for the forum.

“To make sure that we get the best value out of this, we have all decided to work together to make the forum what it needs to be, so that even for generations to come, our people will be able to benefit from it,” Chege said.

Meanwhile, the meeting brought together internal audit administrators from revenue authorities across Uganda, Kenya, South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania.
