MTN MoMo launches the Power of MoMo campaign in Uganda, offering free digital payments for small-value transactions to eliminate cost barriers for users.
KAMPALA, Uganda — MTN Mobile Money (U) Limited has launched the next phase of its flagship campaign, The Power of MoMo, aimed at accelerating the transition to a cashless economy by eliminating fees on small-value transactions.
Under the new initiative, all MTN MoMo payments below UGX 5,000 are now free of transaction charges. The move is designed to make digital payments a natural part of daily life for Ugandans, particularly for frequent, small-scale purchases such as transport fares, market goods, and retail items.
Jemima Kariuki, chief product officer at MTN MoMo, said the campaign addresses primary barriers to digital adoption by making small transactions more cost-effective than cash.
By making payments below UGX 5,000 free, we are directly addressing one of the biggest barriers to digital adoption and giving our customers a compelling reason to choose MoMo over cash every single day, Kariuki said. She added that the platform also provides users with a digital record of their spending and access to broader financial services, including loans and savings.
To demonstrate the practical use of the service, the company is rolling out a 12-hour cashless challenge. The initiative features influencers navigating a full day in Kampala using only MoMo for all expenses, from morning commutes to settling local shop bills.
The campaign encourages users to transition away from physical currency to avoid the inconvenience of carrying cash or searching for change. Customers can access the zero-rated payments and other financial services by using the MTN MoMo app or dialing 1653#.
MTN MoMo currently serves more than 14 million customers in Uganda, offering a suite of services that includes person-to-person transfers, utility payments, and virtual card transactions.
