Overview:
EACOP Ltd. has handed over the rehabilitated 7.5-kilometer Nyamasoga-Katooke Road to Hoima District officials. The project improves transport and healthcare access for 6,500 residents in Buseruka Sub-County along the pipeline route.
HOIMA DISTRICT, Uganda — A newly rehabilitated road has been handed over to authorities in western Uganda, promising to transform transport for thousands of people living near the route of a major oil pipeline.
The 7.5km Nyamasoga-Katooke road was delivered by the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) Ltd. following requests from local leaders to fix the route, which had previously become impassable for vehicles.
The project connects the villages of Kayera and Katooke in Buseruka Sub-County, an area home to more than 6,000 people. It provides a direct link to the Kaiso-Tonya Highway, which officials say will improve access to schools, health centres and local markets.
JB Habumugisha, the deputy managing director of EACOP Ltd., said the project was part of a commitment to ensure communities along the pipeline route saw tangible benefits.
“EACOP remains committed to ensuring that the communities along the pipeline route benefit from improved infrastructure and social services,” Mr. Habumugisha said during a ceremony in the Katooke trading centre.
The Resident District Commissioner for Hoima, Rodgers Mbabazi, accepted the road on behalf of the government. He said such investments were essential for improving the quality of life for residents and advancing local development.
The EACOP project is a 1,443km pipeline designed to transport crude oil from fields in Kabaale, Hoima, to the Port of Tanga in Tanzania for export.
The company is a joint venture between the French energy giant TotalEnergies, which holds a 62% stake, the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), and the national oil companies of Uganda and Tanzania.
