The Uganda Revenue Authority and MTN MoMo have updated their mobile payment platform to reduce queues and allow businesses to settle tax obligations nationwide.

KAMPALA, Uganda – MTN Mobile Money (U) Limited and the Uganda Revenue Authority have announced a partnership to expand digital tax payment options for millions of mobile users.

The enhancements, launched at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel, allow taxpayers to access URA services and government payment options through the MTN MoMo shortcode *165*18#. The updated platform is now live nationwide.

Officials said the simplified menu is designed to increase voluntary compliance by reducing the need for taxpayers to visit physical offices or banks.

Richard Yego, managing director of MTN MoMo, said the update reflects the company’s role as a digital payments partner. He said the goal is to make it easier for individuals and businesses to meet tax obligations from any location.

John Musinguzi Rujoki, commissioner general of the URA, said the move supports a broader strategy to digitize tax administration. He noted that the partnership aims to reduce compliance barriers while improving transparency and efficiency.

MTN MoMo, a subsidiary of MTN Uganda Limited, currently provides mobile financial services to more than 13.6 million customers in the country.
