Absa Bank Uganda launches three new digital solutions—including a multi-currency card and a payment link for businesses—to accommodate the soaring volume of mobile banking in Uganda

KAMPALA, Uganda — Absa Bank Uganda has introduced three new digital payment solutions designed to increase convenience and security for its customers, responding to a significant surge in the country’s mobile banking sector.

The new products—the Absa Multi-Currency Virtual Card, Absa Pay, and Absa Pay by Link—arrive as digital payment adoption reaches new heights in Uganda. Data from the Bank of Uganda’s Integrated Annual Report for June 2025 showed that the value of mobile banking transactions had soared by nearly 40% to 15.5 trillion Ugandan shillings.

Moses Rutahigwa, the retail and business banking director for Absa Bank Uganda, said the new solutions simplify payments both locally and internationally.

“These new solutions are timely and relevant as they align with the rapid digital transformation taking place in Uganda,” Rutahigwa said.

The New Digital Tools

The Multi-Currency Virtual Card is aimed at managing international expenses, allowing users to hold and manage up to five currencies, including the US dollar and the euro, on a single platform. Customers can create virtual cards instantly to manage cross-border transactions and secure better currency rates.

Absa Pay offers customers instant access to a digital debit or credit card through the bank’s internet app, removing the need for a physical card. This enables users to make secure, contactless payments using their mobile phones.

The Absa Pay by Link solution is designed to help business customers, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises, receive payments instantly. Businesses can generate a secure link and share it with customers, who can pay using any Visa-enabled card, reducing the need for cash transactions.

Chad Pollock, vice president and general manager for Visa East Africa, welcomed the innovations, stating they come at a time when Ugandans are ready for modern, digital-first solutions.
