Overview:
A trade shift is underway as the UAE overtakes EAC partners to lead Uganda’s export destinations. The three-day business forum in Kampala seeks to accelerate this $2.85B trade relationship.
KAMPALA, Uganda — The United Arab Emirates has officially surpassed traditional partners like Kenya and Tanzania to become Uganda’s largest export market, a shift highlighted by the fourth annual Uganda-UAE Business Forum, which convened yesterday, Oct. 27, in Kampala.
The economic convergence was underscored by a bilateral trade volume that has now eclipsed $2.85 billion. The three-day forum, held at Speke Resort Munyonyo under the theme “Unlocking Opportunities, Building Bridges through Trade and Investment,” aims to capitalize on this momentum.
The trade boom is heavily dependent on gold shipments, which account for more than $1 billion annually flowing into the Gulf nation.
“This growth underscores the UAE’s role as a gateway for Ugandan goods to global markets,” Zaake Wanume Kibedi, Uganda’s ambassador to the UAE, said in a recent statement.
The strong trade ties are mirrored by a massive increase in investment. Foreign direct investment from the UAE reached $3.5 billion in 2024, marking a tenfold increase that has injected capital into diverse sectors, including agribusiness and renewable energy.
Organized by the Uganda Investment Authority and the UAE Embassy in Kampala, the event is featuring high-level government officials and business leaders. Discussions are focused on policy reforms, supply chain integration and sustainable development.
Ms. Katarikawe Opus Brenda, director of markets at the Presidential Advisory Committee on Exports and Industrial Development, is scheduled to speak on “Enhancing Trade and Investment Relations between the UAE and Uganda.” Attendees will also participate in networking roundtables, investment pitches and a trade exhibition.
With six weekly flights between the nations via Emirates and Flydubai, the event seeks to further accelerate ties established since diplomatic relations began in 1971.
