Boda Boda riders have been urged to support national development by complying with the annual UGX 20,000 advance income tax, as required by Ugandan law.

The appeal was made by Clare Sanyu, Supervisor of the Northern Region Stakeholder Coordination Project, during an engagement with riders in Gulu City. Under current tax regulations, motorcycles—licensed to carry one passenger—must remit UGX 20,000 annually. However, compliance in the sector remains low.

“As riders, you have a responsibility to contribute to national revenue. While people demand services, you must also uphold your rights and obligations,” Sanyu said.

She emphasized the essential role Boda Boda riders play in the transport industry but warned against illegal activities, including transporting contraband or operating unregistered motorcycles.

“Avoid riding numberless bikes, smuggling, or carrying unknown goods. The law is clear, and enforcement will catch up with you,” she cautioned.

The session was welcomed by riders, with Ocen Emmy, Chairperson of the Gulu West Boda Association, applauding URA’s outreach.

“We haven’t interacted with URA for over 10 years. This is a great learning experience,” Ocen said. “We appreciate your effort to shift from harsh enforcement to education.”

He encouraged fellow riders to take such engagements seriously to better understand their tax responsibilities and legal obligations.
