Overview:
Uganda Airlines has commenced direct flights between Entebbe and London Gatwick, offering a new, convenient link for travelers and businesses between Uganda and the UK.
Uganda’s national carrier, Uganda Airlines, has today commenced its highly anticipated direct flight service connecting Entebbe International Airport (EBB) with London Gatwick Airport (LGW). The inaugural flight departed Entebbe this morning, marking a significant expansion of the airline’s international network and promising to bolster ties between Uganda and the United Kingdom.
The new non-stop service will operate four times a week – on Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays – offering same-day return departures from London. This direct link eliminates the need for layovers, promising faster and more convenient travel for both business and leisure passengers.
Uganda Airlines is utilizing its state-of-the-art Airbus A330-800neo aircraft for the route, ensuring a comfortable and efficient long-haul experience. The airline proudly highlighted its position as the first operator of this aircraft type into London Gatwick, underscoring its commitment to a modern and sustainable fleet.
Speaking at the launch, Uganda Airlines CEO Jenifer Bamuturaki emphasized the strategic importance of connecting Uganda directly with a major global aviation hub like London Gatwick. She also pointed out the benefits for onward travel across the airline’s growing African network.
The launch of these direct flights comes at a time of increasing trade and tourism between the two nations. Recent figures indicate substantial trade volumes and significant cumulative exports from Uganda to the UK. Ugandan officials anticipate that this direct air link will further stimulate economic activity, facilitating smoother movement of goods and people.
Hon. Gen. Katumba Wamala, Uganda’s Minister of Works and Transport, underscored the broader vision behind the revival of Uganda Airlines. “This direct service to London Gatwick enables faster, more efficient movement of people and goods by eliminating layovers,” he stated. “This is a win for exporters, importers, and travellers alike – and a driver of growth for our economy.” He also highlighted the potential for a significant boost in tourism from the UK, a key source market for Uganda’s attractions.
Airbus also celebrated the launch, with Gabriel Semelas, President of Airbus Africa & Middle East, commending Uganda Airlines for its commitment to modern aviation and its role in enhancing connectivity within East Africa.
This new direct route to London Gatwick represents a significant step forward for Uganda Airlines, which began commercial operations in 2019 and has rapidly expanded its network across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. The airline’s commitment to a young and efficient fleet has earned it recognition as having one of the youngest aircraft fleets globally for five consecutive years. The direct London service now extends its reach into Europe, promising closer ties and increased opportunities for Uganda.
