Mukula pitches Museveni on a Bugisu coffee plant to boost Uganda's exports, aiming to move beyond raw bean sales and grow the nation's economy.

KAMPALA, Uganda — Capt. (Rtd) Michael Mukula, a prominent figure in Uganda’s ruling NRM party, is pitching President Yoweri Museveni on the potential for significant export growth through the establishment of a state-backed modern coffee processing plant in the Bugisu sub-region.

In a formal petition to the president, Mukula argues that this strategic investment would not only boost Uganda’s industrial capacity but also unlock substantial export opportunities in the global coffee market. He emphasizes the Bugisu region’s existing coffee production strengths and its readiness to become a key player in value-added coffee exports.

Mukula’s proposal highlights the economic imperative of moving beyond the export of raw coffee beans, a practice he attributes to a “colonial legacy” that has hindered Africa’s economic development. He draws parallels to President Museveni’s recent support for coffee processing initiatives in Ntungamo District, suggesting a similar model could transform the Bugisu region into a major export hub.

The proposed plant, according to Mukula, would deliver multiple economic benefits, including increased foreign exchange earnings, job creation, and improved market access for local coffee farmers. He also anticipates a revitalization of Uganda’s cooperative movements, strengthening the agricultural supply chain.

By investing in a modern processing facility, Mukula contends that Uganda can position itself as a leader in the East African coffee market, demonstrating a commitment to economic diversification and industrial growth. He frames the initiative as a strategic move to attract foreign investment and enhance Uganda’s competitiveness in the global economy.

Mukula has pledged to leverage his regional influence to mobilize political and economic support for the project, should President Museveni endorse it. He envisions the plant as a catalyst for transforming Mbale, a major town in Bugisu, into a center of value-added coffee production and export.
