MTN Group, Airtel Africa ink network sharing deals in Uganda, Nigeria

KAMPALA, Uganda — MTN Group and Airtel Africa have entered into agreements to share network infrastructure in Uganda and Nigeria, aiming to improve cost efficiencies, expand coverage and enhance mobile services for millions of customers.

The sharing agreements, announced Wednesday, target improved network quality, particularly in remote and rural areas where customers have limited access to modern connectivity.

“Operators on the continent are seeing sustained demand for data services,” said Ralph Mupita, MTN Group President and Chief Executive Officer. “As MTN, we are driven by the vision of delivering digital solutions that drive Africa’s progress.”

Sunil Taldar, Airtel Africa Chief Executive Officer, noted that the agreements will help avoid duplication of expensive infrastructure, driving operational efficiencies and benefits for customers.

The initiative is part of a growing global trend toward network sharing, enabling telecoms operators to explore innovative solutions to improve service quality while managing costs.

MTN and Airtel Africa are exploring opportunities to share infrastructure in other markets, including Congo-Brazzaville, Rwanda and Zambia. The companies will continue to function as independent market entities and compete freely in shared markets.

The agreements are subject to compliance with local regulatory and statutory requirements.
