Uganda Communications Commission invites applications for FM radio frequencies in select locations, expanding broadcasting services nationwide
KAMPALA, Uganda — Uganda’s communications regulator has opened applications for new FM radio frequencies in select locations across the country.
The move aims to improve access to radio broadcasting services in underserved areas. The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has identified 10 districts where frequencies are available, including Mayuge, Ntoroko, Arua, Kasese, Kabale, Kotido, Zomba, Yumbe and Kitgum.
The available frequencies range from 500 watts to 1000 watts, with varying maximum permissible broadcast powers.
- Mayuge: 1 frequency, 500 watts, 6dB
- Ntoroko: 1 frequency, 500 watts, 6dB
- Arua: 2 frequencies, 500 watts, 6dB
- Kasese: 1 frequency, 500 watts, 6dB
- Kabale: 1 frequency, 500 watts, 6dB
- Kotido: 1 frequency, 500 watts, 6dB
- Zomba: 1 frequency, 1000 watts, 7.5dB
- Yumbe: 1 frequency, 1000 watts, 7.5dB
- Kitgum: 1 frequency, 500 watts, 6dB and 1 frequency, 1000 watts, 7.5dB
Applicants must submit a formal expression of interest, demonstrating how their proposed radio station will serve the local population. They must also show how their station will contribute to the area’s social-economic development.
The expression of interest should also include the planned type of content, such as entertainment, news, education, or religious programming, as well as the geographical coordinates for the planned location of the broadcast transmitter.
To be eligible, applicants must meet the requirements outlined in the Uganda Communications Act 2013 and the Uganda Communications (Licensing) Regulations 2019. They must also not have an existing FM radio frequency spectrum authorization or reservation in the specified geographical areas.

The commission will evaluate the applications based on their potential to provide quality broadcasting services to the local community. Successful applicants will be required to obtain a broadcasting license within 60 days.
The commission has set February 7 as the deadline for applications. All applications must be submitted through the commission’s online application platform.
The opening up of new FM radio frequencies is part of the commission’s efforts to promote diversity and inclusivity in the broadcasting sector. It is also expected to stimulate economic growth and create new opportunities for investment in the sector.
