Overview:

Implementation of the third phase of the ITMS project commences on the 6th of January 2025, with the issuance of the digital registration plates for private and public motor vehicles. 

The government of Uganda has given motorists a 30-day grace period to adopt digital number plates under the Intelligent Transport Monitoring System.

Susan Kataike, the Ministry of Works and Transport’s communications officer, announced this during a press briefing in Mbale. The program began in November 2023 with the rollout of digital plates on government vehicles and will be implemented in phases.

Implementation of the third phase of the ITMS project commences on the 6th of January 2025, with the issuance of the digital registration plates for private and public motor vehicles. 

“The public is hereby informed that the modalities for the transition from the previous service providers, GM Tumpeco Ltd and Arnold Brooklyn and Company Ltd (ABC Ltd) to the new service provider, Joint Stock Company Global Security’ for the third phase, will include the following:

“GM Tumpeco and ABC Ltd will continue to process all orders for Motor Vehicle Registration plates received till the end of 5t1i January 2025. A grace period of 30 days, beginning 5th January 2025 has been given to all motor vehicle dealers and motor vehicle owners to enable them collect their plates from Spear Motors (GM Tumpeco) and ABC Ltd for orders received before 6th January 2025,” Bageya Waiswa, the Permanent Secretary, said in a statement on 3rd January, 2025.

“Motor vehicle dealers and owners are encouraged to use this period to pick up their registration plates from the above-mentioned suppliers. iv. All orders made after 5th January 2025 will be issued by the new service provider, JSCGS.  Note: Once the 30-days grace period elapses, motor vehicle dealers and owners will have to reapply for duplicate plates using the new regime of registration plates as per the Traffic and Road Safety (Registration Plates) Regulations 2022 (As Amended),” he added.
