Overview:

Kainobwisho has been serving as Vice Chair of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Coordination committees since 2020.

Mercy Kainobwisho, the Registrar General of the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), has been appointed the vice chairperson of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) General Assembly.

The WIPO General Assembly gathers over 1,200 delegates from 193 states and 95 observers.

Kainobwisho has been serving as Vice Chair of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Coordination committees since 2020.

During her new term of service, she will be working with Mr Alfredo Suescum from Panama who was elected the chair of the WIPO Assembly.

Kainobwisho welcomed her new appointment.

“I thank the 193 WIPO member states and over 95 observers for trusting us to lead. Uganda continues to shine,” she tweeted on Tuesday, July 18, 2023.

In a statement, URSB welcomed Kainobwisho’s appointment.

“Your outstanding leadership and unwavering commitment inspire us all. Congratulations,” they said.

WIPO is the global forum for intellectual property policy, services, information and cooperation.

Its mission is to lead the development of a balanced and effective international IP system that enables innovation and creativity for the benefit of all.

Kainobwisho  holds a Bachelor of Laws degree, obtained from the Makerere University, a Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre, and a Master of Laws from the University of Turin in Italy. She also holds a Master of Business Administration, obtained from Makerere University Business School.

She has previously worked as a State Attorney and In November 2011, she joined URSB as the Manager, Intellectual Property, serving in that capacity until June 2013. She was then promoted to Director, Business Registration, serving there until February 2017, when she became the Director, Intellectual Property at URSB.
