Ms Sylvia Mulinge, the MTN Uganda Chief Executive Officer, said the MoU marks the first-ever consideration by a telecommunications company to deploy 5G in a client’s operations and affirms MTN Uganda's readiness to deploy this game changing technology in the country.
MTN Uganda together with their technology partners Huawei Technologies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hima Cement that will see the use of 5G in the latter’s operations.
Speaking at the function in Kasese District on Monday, 03 April 2023, Ms Sylvia Mulinge, the MTN Uganda Chief Executive Officer, said the MoU marks the first-ever consideration by a telecommunications company to deploy 5G in a client’s operations and affirms MTN Uganda’s readiness to deploy this game changing technology in the country.
“This partnership demonstrates our commitment to bringing cutting-edge technology to our customers operations and we shall be ready to deploy 5G as soon as it receives the technical greenlight and regulatory approval necessary to deploy this technology,” she said.
“We recognize the need to leverage technology to help solve the challenges facing Africa. By empowering Uganda with high-speed connectivity, the company is enabling access to collective intelligence and unlock solutions that will accelerate progress in different sectors. We are committed to investing in leading connectivity to drive economic growth, improve productivity, and increase efficiency,” Ms Mulinge added.

Monzer Ali, the Chief Technology and Information Officer at MTN Uganda, said together with Huawei, they conducted a demonstration that showcased the kind of speeds and reduced latency that separates 5G from current technologies.
“In the right conditions, 5G can be 100 times faster than 4G, and relatedly, latency or the delay in the transmission of data between points can be reduced to a mere 5 milliseconds (from an average of 60 milliseconds on 4G),” he said.
Jean-Michel Pons, the Hima Cement CEO, said the partnership will make their business smarter from end-to-end.
“With this partnership, we can see what’s possible with 5G technology which will accelerate our ‘Plants of Tomorrow’ program to find automated and data-driven solutions to make our industrial operations more sustainable,” he said.
Gao Fei, the Managing Director Huawei Technologies (Uganda) Co. Ltd, said: “Huawei’s vision is to bring digital transformation to everyone and ensure a fully connected and intelligent world. We’re MTN’s technology partner and are committed to the roll of 5G in Uganda, which is also key in driving our vision.”
