Uganda’s participation in the annual show, which is organized by the National Ploughing Association of Ireland, is expected to be flagged off by officials from the agriculture ministry.
Over thirty Ugandan horticulture exporters are due to take part in the annual “National Ploughing Championship” and exhibition that will take place in the Republic of Ireland.
Florence Nakitto, the chairperson of Horticulture Exporters Association of Uganda (HORTEXIA), who will be heading the Ugandan delegation, said the show will bring together participants from over 40 countries from all around the world, who will converge in the city of Ratheniska near Dublin between September 19th-23rd.
“Many European supermarkets and individual dealers in horticulture have shown interest in our products. As a result, export volumes have been going up year after year. We expect such old business partners and new prospective clients from all over the world to come over and visit our stalls,” Nakitto told reporters recently.
She said whereas the National Ploughing Championship were launched in 2019 before the COVID-19 lockdowns set in, it has attracted a lot of global enthusiasm.
“For us, this has become a global marketplace where we receive orders, joint venture partners, and sell our products,” said Nakitto.
Dennis Katende, the HORTEXIA publicist said they encourage their members to assume higher standards and obtain certification, to be able to access the foreign market.
“Our members currently export to markets such as South Sudan, DR Congo, Somalia, South Africa, UK, USA, Canada, among others. Without adhering to standards, this would not have been possible,” he said.
Nakitto said the participants in the exhibition will display products such as Hot Pepper, Avocado, Sweet Potatoes, Mangoes, jack fruit, cassava, pineapples, guavas, oranges, banana, cucumber, onions, among other products.
