Uganda exported goods worth a record $50.6m (about Shs182b) to South Sudan in February 2022, latest data shows.
According to statistics from Bank of Uganda, most of the exports were cereals, maize, wheat flour, sugar, vegetable oils, beer, soft drinks, iron, steel, cement and motor vehicle re-exports.
The figure is about Shs40b more than what Uganda exported to South Sudan in January 2022 ($39.7m or Shs142b).
The exports were more than what Uganda exported to Kenya during the period, which stood at $46.2m (Shs166.3b).
The increase is attributed to enhanced security, especially on the Nimule-Juba road in South Sudan where attacks by militants have in the past resulted in the killing of Ugandan drivers. South Sudan is highly dependent on import, mainly from Kenya and Uganda.
According to the Bank of Uganda report, Uganda’s exports to South Sudan increased to $503.3m (Shs1.8 trillion), for the year ended February 2022, from $353.9m (Shs1.2 trillion) for the period ended February 2021, which represented a percentage growth of 33 percent.
During the last eight years, Uganda’s exports to South Sudan have increased at an annualized rate of 46 percent from $17.3m in 2012 to $357m in 2020. In 2020, Uganda exported $357M to South Sudan. The main products exported from Uganda to South Sudan were Raw Sugar ($32M), Cereal Flours ($28.1M), and Cement ($27.6M).
