President Museveni has said the scientific advisory committee on Covid-19 is looking into the request to lift the travel restrictions boda bodas as the economy fully reopens.
Effective Monday, 24 January 2022, curfew has been lifted in Uganda after about two years, effectively reopening the economy.
However, the boda bodas are not allowed to operate beyond 7pm.
But on Sunday, the President said the committee will review these terms and communicate accordingly.
“My Boda Boda people I had asked that they stop at 7:00 pm but I have seen them protesting in different ways and on media platforms. However, I have asked the committee to look into their matter,” he said.
“I have asked them to leave the security and look at other perspectives, they will review it and communicate. Meanwhile, the rest should continue as per my initial address,” Museveni added.
Information minister Chris Baryomunsi said the curfew for the boda bodas is both a COVID-19 related and a security issue.
“The boda boda riders should take heart. We are going to sit and discuss this with the scientists and guide on this issue,” he added.
The full opening is expected to revive the economy that has contracted severely over the last two years, with taxes remaining very low.
The bars are now in full operation.
“Opening the spaces that have been under restriction is one aspect of trying to revive the economy. We are also going to review the budget that we are currently working on,” Baryomunsi said.
