Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) to promote Kampala as a tourism destination.

UTB executive director Lilly Ajarova and KCCA executive director Dorothy Kisaka signed the MoU in Kampala on Tuesday, 30 November 2021.

“In line with NDP(III), our strategic Plan 2020/2021 – 2024/25 is to prioritize collaborations with tourism site owners, the private sector and other MDAs to develop and package diversified tourism products & increase tourism earnings,” Ms Ajarova said.

“UTB will support KCCA in establishment of tourist information centres at suitable locations and undertake/coordinate tourism research regarding Destination Kampala,” she added.

On her part, Dr Kisaka said the focus of the MoU and collaboration is to promote Kampala as a tourism destination and a gateway to Uganda’s premium tourism products, organise and support social events that highlight Kampala and Uganda’s historical and cultural diversity, and enhance tourism education/awareness and conservation in the public and private schools in Kampala City.

“Kampala is the face of this country and as a City; it has potential to attract visitors. This potential stems from its own natural form, sense of place, sense of history, spirit and other ethos,” Dr Kisaka said.

“As city administrators, we are ambitious to delivering a vibrant, attractive and sustainable city to Ugandans and visitors. KCCA alone cannot achieve an admirable, attractive and hospitable City unless we work with stakeholders with common interest like UTB,” she added.

Dr Kisaka explained that Kampala hosts most of the major tourism infrastructure (hotels and events facilities) and collaborating with UTB is one way of achieving National Development Goals and empowering the private sector.

“With the COVID 19 pandemic ravaging the world, we need to work together to deliver Uganda to the rest of the world,” she said.

“In closing, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to UTB and my colleagues in KCCA for making this agreement a reality. With good will, clear ambitions and a strong commitment to work together, I look forward to taking the next steps towards our common goal of a Vibrant, Attractive and Sustainable City,” she added.
